Donkies and rain and more rain!!
Donkies and rain and more rain!!
Heavy rains filled the numerous small revines on our mostly gravel road route on Tuesday, resulting in slow crossings and traveling due to the heavy rains and wet soil.
The last part of our first leg of travel happened in very hard rain making for a very wet experience for all concerned.
Our 2 donkeys that pulled the cart – which was made by volunteers living in De Rust – was put to bed with as much fresh Alfalfa and bales of Eragrostis tef as they wanted. The 4 non “working” donkeys arrived at our overnight spot between De Rust and Oudtshoorn early in the morning already by trailer and spend their free day doing donkey “things” and eating.
Wednesday morning we woke up to dark skies and the promise of more rain to come.
We harnessed two fresh and well rested donkeys and set of direction Oudtshoorn followed closely behind by our support vehicle.
The rest of the donkeys spend their whole morning grazing, as they only needed to travel 30mins to our next overnight spot and there was no need for them to leave early or hurry. I think our donkeys loves this adventure as they receive 5 star treatment normally reserved for thoroughbread race horses!
The donkeys receive so much attention from the public and children everywhere we stop for them to rest and eat/drink and it is wonderfull to see how people love and respond to them.
With a promise of clearer skies our spirits are lifting…
“Donkies must be seen and never hurt”.
