Life changing surgery!

Life saving surgery!!

A young boy suffering from Portal Hypertension a life threatening condition, received surgery at Kiaat Private Hospital in Nelspruit.

He required a Splenectomy (Removal of the spleen) and a Rex shunt to bring his condition under control.

Meso-Rex shunt (MRS) is a surgical procedure that restores physiological portal venous blood flow to the liver by using a graft to connect the superior mesenteric vein and the left portal vein within the Rex recess, and can relieve variceal bleeding and other complications associated with EHPVO.

Due to the complexity of the surgery and the age of the boy, a whole team of out of town specialists flew in to Nelspruit and drove from Johannesburg to participate with the surgery at Kiaat private Hospital, with Dr. Elliot Motloung a well known Pediatric surgeon from Nelspruit.

Dr. Elliot Motloung was joined in theatre by a specialist Pediatric Anaesthesiologist from Johannesburg, who did the anaesthetics for our young boy and Dr’s Sanele Madziba and Dr Hansie Mangray specialist Pediatric surgeons who travelled especially from Pietermaritzburg and Dr. Lesiba Mogotlane flew in from Cape Town to participate in this complex lifesaving surgery. This young man had a top team of Doctors taking care of him at the very modern Kiaat private hospital in Nelspruit.

On Wednesday when I took this young man to be admitted to Kiaat Hospital he was very brave, and although we could not communicate he smiled and gave me the thumbs up, when the ward sister put him in his bed.

The management and staff at Kiaat Hospital is very professional and very attentive, from the reception right through to the theatre and nursing staff and to top it all, the cafeteria makes a great Expresso….!

Our boy underwent a major life saving surgery, and we could not have wished for a more Professional medical team and a better environment to ensure the best outcome for him.

Kiaat Private Hospital and Dr Elliot Motloung, we are forever in your debt, thank you!
