Medical outreach to Magalela

A dozen vehicles loaded with equipment, volunteers, goods and even mobile toilets and a jumping castle descended on Magalela squatter camp outside White river on Saturday morning 12 October 2019 on our Medical outreach to the squatter camp.

This camp is home to about 1500 persons of which an estimated 130 are children and our purpose with the outreach was to allow the residents to see our volunteer Doctor, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and to help and treat any sick children and their parents living there.

We saw a total of 48 patients and children with prescriptions received their medications after it was collected from White river pharmacy and delivered to them. A number of kids was identified that was not thriving and was placed on special diets.

Dr Veronique van der Linde and the medical sisters was kept very busy with all the patients queuing up to receive medical attention.

So many very kind and interesting people came out to help us that it is impossible for us to thank everyone individually. Margaret Stone who is a legend in White River handed out toys to children that she brought along to the outreach. Thank you very much Margaret, you are simply awesome!

The children were spoiled and treated by having their faces painted, they also had a jumping castle which they thoroughly enjoyed with a few smaller ones only staring at it from a distance before retrieving back to the safety of their mom’s, laps. They also received fresh hot dogs and cool drinks to keep them occupied all whilst waiting to see our medical volunteers.

Babies also received special gift boxes that was collected for and donated to us at the Busamed arts and culture evening a while ago. The Mothers faces lit up when they opened their boxes and saw what was inside their gift boxes….

Thanks to all the volunteers from Stepmed and Church unlimited the day was a total success with us busy planning our return visit already….😃

Mario’s Butchery supplied us with all the bread rolls for the Hot dogs and Fun Galore for donating the jumping castle for the day. Thanks to you the day was a awesome success, Thank you!!
